Years In Search

What This Actually Is

An independent SEO consultant, not an agency. You work with me directly — strategy, diagnosis and the difficult calls — which is a different product from a team of five juniors following a checklist someone else wrote.

Based in London, Ontario, working across Toronto, Canada, the United States and India. The Canadian market is home and the largest share of the work, but search doesn't respect borders and neither do most of the clients.

The work now spans two surfaces. Classic search — ranking, technical health, content that earns its position. And generative search — being named and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews the same question they used to type into a search box. Those are related but not identical problems, and most consultants are still only solving the first one.

Where The Work Concentrates

shopping_cart

eCommerce SEO

Product and category architecture, faceted navigation, and the technical debt that quietly caps a store's ceiling. Usually the highest-value technical work available, because the revenue link is direct and immediate.

cloud

SaaS & B2B SEO

Long consideration cycles, technical buyers, and content that has to survive scrutiny from people who know the subject better than the writer. Bottom-of-funnel first, always.

travel_explore

AI Search Optimization

Getting cited in generated answers rather than just ranked in blue links. Measured properly across engines, with a diagnosis of why — see brand visibility.

build

Technical SEO

Crawl health, indexation, Core Web Vitals, migrations. Including the judgment to correctly ignore most of what an audit tool flags — a crawler once reported thirty-eight dead pages on a client site that were all live and healthy.

location_on

Local SEO

Google Business Profile, local pack visibility, citation consistency. For Toronto and Ontario businesses where the buyer is nearby and the intent is immediate.

groups

Fractional Leadership

When the need is ongoing ownership rather than a project. Covered on the fractional head of SEO page.

How An Engagement Runs

01
Diagnosis Before Prescription

A technical crawl, a Search Console review, and an honest read of the competitive position. Most engagements start by discovering the problem is not the one you were told it was.

02
Rank The Findings Ruthlessly

Every audit produces a hundred items and roughly four of them matter. You get the four, in order, with the reasoning — not a spreadsheet you'll never open again.

03
Fix The Foundation

Technical health and indexation first, because content published onto a broken foundation compounds the problem instead of the results.

04
Build Content That Earns Position

Briefs grounded in what actually ranks, not word-count targets pulled from a tool. The briefing method is published openly.

05
Cover The AI Surface

Entity definition, extractable answers, and the third-party placements that determine whether generative engines mention you at all.

06
Report In Business Terms

Revenue and pipeline, not ranking tables. This is what keeps search funded when budgets get reviewed.

Fit

Good fit

  • checkA SaaS, eCommerce or B2B company where organic should be a primary channel and currently isn't.
  • checkAn in-house team doing competent work on the wrong priorities.
  • checkA business that ranks well but suspects AI answers are quietly eating the click.
  • checkAnyone who has been burned by an agency and wants to deal with one accountable person.

Poor fit

  • closeLooking for guaranteed rankings or a fixed timeline on a competitive term.
  • closeWanting volume link building or anything that trades long-term risk for a short-term chart.
  • closeNo willingness to change the site. Diagnosis without implementation is expensive entertainment.
  • closeNeeding a full agency team for large-scale execution — that's a different shape of engagement.

Engagement Shapes

Technical & Content Audit

Fixed scope · one-time

A full diagnosis with a ranked, defensible roadmap. The most common starting point, and frequently enough on its own for a capable in-house team to execute against for two quarters.

AI Visibility Baseline

Fixed scope · one-time

Where you stand across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, and why. Increasingly the first thing clients ask for.

Ongoing Consulting

Monthly · retained

Strategy, prioritisation and review on a regular cadence, with your team executing. The most cost-effective shape when you have people.

Fractional Ownership

Monthly · retained

Deeper involvement — owning the roadmap, running the cadence, sitting in the leadership conversations.

Pricing is set per engagement after a scoping call — scope, cadence and account count move it too much for a single published number to be honest. You will have a fixed figure before any work starts.

Common Questions

Do you only work with Canadian companies?

No. Toronto is the base and the largest share of the work, but engagements run across North America and further out. Timezone overlap matters more than borders — most of the work is with teams between Eastern and Pacific.

Consultant or agency — what's the difference here?

You get me. There is no account manager relaying instructions to a junior, and no team you meet once during the pitch and never again. That constrains how many clients I take, which is the trade-off you're buying.

Do you handle AI search as well as Google?

Yes, and increasingly it's the more interesting half. Ranking first no longer guarantees being mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question — different measurement, different failure modes. Covered on the AI search visibility page.

What size company do you work with?

Anywhere from a funded startup with one marketer to an enterprise team with a search function that has stalled. The common factor is that someone senior needs to own the strategy and nobody currently does.

How quickly do results show?

Technical fixes can move things in weeks. Content and authority work runs on a quarter-to-quarter cycle. Anyone quoting a faster timeline on a competitive term is selling you something.

Find out what's
actually wrong.

A diagnostic conversation, not a pitch. If the answer is that you don't need me, I'll tell you that.
